SYP78 Sitting Overview

SYP78 has ended and all of the motions passed, here's a quick rundown of the sitting:

Members motions are proposals by other MSYPs hoping to add to SYP policy. You can see all of SYP's previous passed motions in the SYP Policy Log. I vote in accordance with my consituent's views which I gather before each sitting. This sitting I voted agreed to all of the motions except for the 4-day work week one, which I voted abstain on due to it being controversial amongst my consituents. All of the motions ended up passing and have been added to the SYP policy log.

The motions which passed were:

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament recognises the cost of living crisis has created significant difficulty and hardship for young people and believes they should be supported in reducing the negative impacts of the crisis.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament calls on the Scottish Government to make free rail travel available to all under-22s in Scotland.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that by improving education about neurodiversity received by adults who work with young people, there can be improved diagnoses and understanding of the differences among neurodiverse young people.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament acknowledges the adverse effects that grief and loss can have on young people and believes that all young people suffering from bereavement should be offered support and resources based on their individual needs.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament recognises the potential benefits that would come from workplaces adopting a four-day workweek with no loss of pay and believes that all workplaces, where possible, should seek to implement this.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that, in order to tackle the problem of late diagnosis among young cancer patients, yearly cancer screenings should be offered to young people and should be offered alongside national action to educate young people on the symptoms of cancer.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that all public transport stops in Scotland should be equipped with 24/7 CCTV footage and increased lighting.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that everyone should have the right to easily access a variety of free contraception, and that this should be supported by education in schools on how to use them safely as well as their benefits and side effects.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament supports Unite’s “Get ME Home Safely” campaign and believes that local authorities should use their powers to allow licensing boards to include additional criteria when considering late opening applications from licensed premises dependent on venues providing free transport home for night shift employees.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that the Scottish Government should work with Scottish universities to ensure that purpose-built student accommodation is properly maintained and held to a high standard.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament calls for the creation of a food voucher scheme which would provide young people whose right to food is not being upheld at home the independent ability to access a wide range of food choices at all times.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament welcomes the Scottish Government’s commitment to provide free tuition at Scottish universities to displaced Ukrainian students and calls for this support to be extended to all displaced young people residing in Scotland, regardless of their country of origin.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that decision makers should take further steps to ensure students who do not speak English as their primary language have their right to education upheld through ensuring there are quality ‘English for Speakers of Another Language’ (ESOL) classes made available in every school and college across Scotland, as well as increased training for educators to help them better include these students.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that, in order to ensure the future of young people everywhere, decision makers should take more action to protect Scotland’s natural environment and biodiversity.

  • The Scottish Youth Parliament believes that sport should be accessible to all and calls on the Scottish Government and local authorities to minimise the barriers, including transport, that prevents the participation of young people in Scotland’s rural areas.
